ancient curses - protect item

i dont think thatprotect item on curses is working properly atm because i lost a c maul whilst using the protect item prayer on curse book. i died with the prayer still running. when i spawned back i had lost my chaotic maul...... i dont know why i diddnt keep it as i still had 37 prayer points left when i died..... thanks

When you click on the chaos altar to get the praers or curses, it says "Protect Item does not work".
